FOREIGN LANGUAGE BASICS
I did FLB spanish because I want to be able to engage on a personal level with the local community when I travel across Latin America. It's also a perk to say you can speak the second most widely spoken language in the world.
It's affordable, you get to learn it with like minded people, and you gain a cultural understanding.
Me hablo muy poco español pero FLB!

I first heard about FLB from a good friend of mine who was involved in organising it. I was looking for something fun, interesting, and useful to fill my time over the winter break - FLB seemed to offer all that and more, packaged in a convenient and accessible format.
To anyone who keeps hearing about FLB but is still hesitant, I would say just take a step outside of your comfort zone and go for it! I was in exactly the same position before I applied, not knowing a single word of Spanish, but I figured it was worth a shot and would be a great learning experience either way. And I'm really glad I did - every minute of the classes was really engaging and interactive. FLB is also probably the cheapest structured activity you'll ever find in Sydney!
What I got out of FLB wasn't just the basics of the language. Besides being able to practice conversing with a native speaker, a lot of time was devoted to learning more broadly about their culture and way of life back home. Hearing about and understanding these kinds of things first-hand really opens up so many opportunities if you're ever interested in travelling in that area. Outside of the classroom there were also a lot of social activities organised - in our case, we got to make use of our new language skills by sitting down for a meal at some of the many Spanish and South American restaurants in Sydney. I really enjoyed meeting a lot of other like-minded people, and made some new friends who I'm still in touch with today. Overall it'd be fair to say that FLB was Fantastic, Lively, and Brilliant!

I've wanted to learn Spanish for a while now but didn't have the spare units to try it out as a formal university subject, so I chose FLB as an affordable way to explore my interest in the language in a friendly environment.
I really liked how classes were not only about building the foundations of our Spanish language skills, but how they also introduced us to the many cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. I did not have much knowledge or interest in Latin America before FLB, but our teacher was so engaging and passionate about it that I would love to be able to use the Spanish we learned in class to make travelling there a lot easier to do!"

I had been wanting to learn another language for a while and a friend (who also did FLB) showed me this, and i thought "why not?" It was totally worth it, especially when I met some awesome people. Besides, doing FLB wasn't like learning a language at uni (did it, and it was horrible). Other than actually learning the language, we also ate authentic spanish food, learnt specific things that only 'natives' would know, and a billion and one other things. It was a really great learning experience.
